Guardians in Russian museums

During my visit to Saint Petersburg in 2014, I had noticed the ladies responsible for controlling the halls of museums: according to an unusual local “policy”, the staff is composed almost entirely of retired, elderly, unassuming ladies often sitting absorbed in their thoughts, who do not know any other language than Russian making it difficult for visitors to interact with them. This arouses considerable wonder if you think that they are also present in an important museum like the Ermitage.
I took pictures of those “carers of museums”, often capturing them in moments of absent-mindedness with resigned expressions, as if they were reflecting on the inconsistency of their presence there and their uselessness towards many visitors trying in vain to get directions and explanations.

I created some diptychs, matching the ladies with the halls and locations of the museums in which they work. I tried to capture and represent their affinity: they have a similar attitude, clothing, expression, the thin vein of resigned sadness that characterizes the expression of their faces and are completely unrelated to their place of work.
